Dissolved Gas Analysis stands out as the most reliable tool for early detection of emerging faults in transformers and tap selector units. Mineral-based oils and silicones, chosen for their high dielectric strength, heat transfer properties, and chemical stability, serve as insulation fluids in transformers. Under typical operating conditions, minimal decomposition of the dielectric fluid occurs. However, in the presence of a thermal or electrical fault, both the dielectric fluid and solid insulation undergo partial decomposition. The resulting low molecular weight decomposition gases, including hydrogen, methane, ethane, acetylene, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide, are soluble in the dielectric fluid. Analyzing the quantity of each fault gas present in the fluid allows for the identification of fault processes such as corona, sparking, overheating, and arcing.
